Maryam Ahranjani, Co-Founder
Maryam Ahranjani, adjunct professor and associate director of the Program on Law and Government at American University Washington College of Law (WCL), currently co-teaches a seminar in advanced constitutional law to upper-level law students at WCL. She is co-author of Youth Justice in America (CQ Press, 2005). A magna cum laude graduate of Northwestern University, she holds a law degree from WCL and has taught constitutional rights and responsibilities through the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project for six years in Washington, D.C. public high schools. In addition to developing curriculum for the Marshall-Brennan Project and conducting teacher-training seminars, she coordinates the national and international expansion of the Marshall-Brennan Project. Professor Ahranjani has published numerous articles and lesson plans in the area of constitutional law.
Andrew Ferguson, Co-Founder
Andrew G. Ferguson, J.D., L.L.M. is a public defender in Washington D.C. Mr. Ferguson received a Master’s of Advocacy Degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and was awarded the E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship teaching law students at the Georgetown Criminal Justice Clinic. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He co-authored Youth Justice in America (CQ Press 2005), a textbook on constitutional criminal law and juvenile justice.
Jamie Raskin, Co-Founder
Jamie Raskin is a professor of constitutional law at American University and Director of its Program on Law and Government. He founded the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, which sends law students into public high schools and junior high schools to teach about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He is the bestselling author of We the Students and Overruling Democracy: The Supreme Court versus the American People. He also co-authored the textbook Youth Justice in America (CQ Press, 2005). In November 2006, Jamie was elected State Senator in Maryland's District 20, Silver Spring and Takoma Park.
Nisha Thakker, Executive Director
Nisha Thakker obtained her JD from American University Washington College of Law (WCL). While serving as a Marshall-Brennan fellow during her second year of law school at the SEED Public Charter School in Washington, DC, Nisha realized that there was a far greater population that could be served by teaching constitutional literacy. Along with Maryam Ahranjani and two other WCL students, she is teaching constitutional rights and responsibilities at the Youth Services Center in Washington, DC. Nisha is also currently participating in the Education Project at WCL, a student-run group interested in education law, policy and reform. She has published articles in the Sustainable Development Law and Policy Journal at WCL and the ABA Commission on Law and Aging Bifocal Newsletter.
Anuj Mallick, President
Anuj Mallick is a Financial Services Consultant in Banking and Securities with Deloitte Consulting. Prior to consulting, Anuj conducted on innovative research at the High Performance Computing laboratory for The National Security Agency at The George Washington University, where he published on open source intellectual property optimal selection tools and characterizing FPGA design practices for transformation from VLSI development processes. He was also part of the AOL Home of the 21st Century team to develop context awareness using ultrasonic technologies.
Peter Yeung, Vice President
Peter Yeung is General Director of Mediachase Inc, East Coast Office and its Professional Services Operations. Throughout his many years of management, business and technology consulting experience, he has also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) working with abused and neglected children in the Montgomery County (MD) Juvenile Court System. Along with being a business administration undergraduate and graduate alumni of Carnegie Mellon University, Mr. Yeung also will be obtaining his Juris Doctorate degree from the Washington College of Law in 2008.
Mital Gandhi, Treasurer
Mital currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the US India Business Alliance (USIBA), helping to promote trade between the US and India. Prior to his employment with the USIBA, Mital managed the National Sales and Marketing for Live Nation (formerly Clear Channel Entertainment). Mital also has four years of experience in non-profit fundraising, having served in various roles including international fundraising in the Development Department of American University, Washington, DC.
Adair Parr, Secretary
Adair Parr is currently Chief Resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program. She graduated cum laude from Duke University, earned her JD at Georgetown Law School and her M.D. from Tulane Medical School. Adair trained in General Psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital and is has completed a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Christopher Caple, Member of the Board
Christopher Caple currently serves as Legislative Counsel & Military Legislative Advisor to U.S. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida. Before joining Senator Nelson's National Security Team, he was Legislative Assistant to U.S. Representative Melvin Watt and law clerk to the Honorable Arthur B. Vieregg of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit of Virginia. In addition to his Juris Doctor degree from American University's Washington College of Law, he holds undergraduate degrees in philosophy and mathematics from the University of North Florida. He was a nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare specialist in the U.S. Marine Corps before he was honorably discharged in September 2000.
Eric Lerum, Member of the Board
A 2003 graduate of the Washington College of Law at American University, Eric Lerum currently serves as the Chief of Staff to the Deputy Mayor for Education for the District of Columbia. Before joining the Deputy Mayor's office, Eric was the Legislative Counsel to the DC Council's Committee on Education, Libraries, and Recreation, chaired by Councilmember Kathy Patterson. Prior to working at the Council, he worked as a policy analyst for the District of Columbia Board of Education. Eric developed his commitment to and passion for public education and youth justice issues while in law school, where he served as a Fellow in the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.
Gwen Stern, Member of the Board
Gwen Stern, Esq. is the Director and Auxiliary Professor of Trial Advocacy at Drexel University's Law School. She is also serves as the Director of its Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Program. A seasoned litigator who was an attorney at White and Williams, LLP and Kline & Specter, PC where she focused on catastrophic injury cases. Prior to joining Penn Law, she taught Introduction and Advanced Trial Advocacy for many years at Temple University Beasley School of Law. She was also previously the Director of Trial Training for the Philadelphia High School Mock Trial Competition which encompassed 40 schools. The Mock Trial Competition was implemented through Temple University Beasley School of Law.
